AN ESSEX venue has banned clown costumes from its upcoming Halloween celebrations due to the recent "killer clown" craze which has been reported across the country.

Barleylands, in Billericay, will not allow the costumes to be worn for its family-friendly Spooky Nights events, which will be held on the evenings of October 28 and 29.

The two nights are designed purely for families and with most dressing up in fancy dress, the site said the decision was made to ensure everyone can enjoy the experience as much as usual.

Venue manager Dave Finkle said: “Our legendary Spooky Nights are bursting with Halloween happenings and we’re committed to making the event fun but safe for all visitors. We are not a scream park or fright night attraction, our activities are 100% family friendly and we felt banning clowns will ensure all our visitors feel safe"

All the activities at the events are rated from U to 12 A, ensuring parents understand the thrill ratings suitable for their children.

Spooky Nights are held on October 28 and 29 from 6.30pm until 9pm at Barleylands Farm Park, Billericay.
