Frustrated staff and shoppers are calling for action on a dangerous loose kerb that trips people up on a daily basis.
Essex Highways won’t fix the kerb on the corner of Guithavon Street off Newland Street, Witham, instead saying it will monitor it with routine inspections.
The wobbly stone has claimed numerous victims in the last six months - including a man in his 80s who was rushed to hospital after falling into the road on March 3.
Jane Coleman, deputy town clerk at Witham Town Council, said it had reported the broken kerb to Essex County Council several times.
Jordan Pierce, head waiter at Hold the Anchovies, which looks out over the kerb, said the incident on March 3 was not the first staff have had to call an ambulance for.
He said: "Everybody knows about that kerb, people trip so regularly that we see it all the time.
"A lot of elderly people go over on it if they’re pushing a trolley and don’t see it.
"Highways have assessed it and it doesn’t seem to be a priority."
An Essex Highways spokesman said: "We are aware of and have inspected the reported kerb defect at the junction of Newland Street and Guithavon Street.
"No repairs are planned at this time however we will continue to monitor it during our routine inspections programme."
