A campaign to cut the speed limit on a busy village road has had a reversal of fortunes after a highway’s boss rescinded his decision to refuse it.

A total of 150 parents and residents in Rivenhall signed a petition calling for the speed limit to be cut from 30mph to 20mph outside the village school in Church Road.

This is because some drivers coming from the 60mph section further up the road ignore the lower limit.

When Essex County Council refused, parish council chairman James Abbott asked if a 40mph buffer zone could be installed between the two zones in a bid to slow drivers down.

Rodney Bass, cabinet member for highways, initially refused and said no further action would be taken however he has had a change of heart this week.

Mr Abbott, who is leading the campaign alongside Rivenhall Primary School, appealed the decision because he claimed a council report was incorrect.
