More than 50 animals have been stolen from Braintree and Witham in the past five years - although not always the types you would expect.
Four guinea pigs were taken from Witham in 2010 and in 2011, 20 fish were stolen from Braintree.
In 2012, a further five fish were taken from Braintree, and 18 chickens were nabbed from Witham.
The year 2013 saw three more chickens taken, this time from Braintree.
In the same year, two dogs and a rabbit were also stolen from Witham.
Veterinary nurse Dot Creighton, who works at Millennium Veterinary Practice, in Millennium Way, Braintree, said: “It is a really not nice thing to happen."
