Report the tosser is the latest message in Braintree Council’s continued campaign against litterbugs.

In its latest drive it will paste the “report the tosser” slogan across bus stops, petrol pumps and council vans in a bid to get the public to back its campaign.

The move follows last year’s controversial posters which used the phrase “don’t be a tosser” and divided the opinion of the district’s residents over whether it was too offensive.

Following the appearance of the first tosser adverts in early 2012, 339 tip offs were received, including 33 following the “pain in the butt” cigarette specific campaign.

The calls led to 117 Fixed Penalty Notices and 99 warning letters while the other cases are still under investigation.

The maximum fine dished out so far for littering is £717.50 after the case was heard in court.

Council surveys showed an overall average of a 55 per cent drop in car litter, with some areas showing 100 per cent improvement, and in an online poll more 2000 people said they would report a car litter offender if they saw one.

Councillor Wendy Schmitt, cabinet Member for place and the sponsor of the Green Heart of Essex said: “People know what they should be doing with their car litter - and it is not tossing it out the window."
