A couple say their lives have been made hell after an alleged council blunder left them struggling to repay £2,500.

Zena and John Wotton, of Queen’s Gardens, Panfield, had been claiming housing and council tax benefit for a number of years up until a letter arrived from Braintree Council just days before Christmas saying they had been overpaid.

The overpayments included £1,796.18 in housing benefit between May and December last year and £707.57 in council tax benefit between May last year and March this year.

The couple have begun repaying the money, but insist they always sent in pay slips and other information.

They claim a council error was to blame and that they never received a number of letters allegedly sent to them.
