Summer sailing already a success
A WINNING weekend of sailing has been enjoyed by the Blackwater Sailing Club.
With the Britania trophy, Foster Bowl series and Mirror dinghy weekend a whole host of boats could be seen racing in the 12 to 16 knot breeze.
About 45 entrants took part in the Brittania trophy - which also forms part of the Douglas Charlton Blackwater Travellers Series - with Phil Newman winning in his Phantom ahead of the faster Fireballs due to his skilled sailing.
Runner up was Alan Jackson and Lorna Larval in the aptly named Merlin Rocket with Ian Smith third in Vortex.
A spokesman for the club said: "Attended by club members and visitors, the event saw some of the most demanding and skilful starts that had been witnessed at the club in recent years.
"In a mix of fast and slow boats from the 49ers and Sprites, sheer competitiveness led to groans from the race box and some very lucky close encounters.
"But all starts and restarts were well managed and the courses set were testing and a joy to sail."
In the cruiser racing skipper Barry Foulds, together with Peter Gould and Bob Appleby on Eroica ***cor***, took the Foster Bowl with first place in three races.
And the Mirror dinghy contest was won by Lucy and Henry Bettley.
Blackwater Sailing Club is based in Basin Road, Heybridge.
