Unbeaten Hawes cannot save Witham

Witham were beaten by seven wickets at newly-promoted Haverhill, in Marshall Hatchick Two Counties League division two.

Witham's skipper Peter Allen lost the toss and was asked to bat.

But openers John Chick and Kaan Hawes found runs hard to come by on a slow pitch and outfield.

They managed to put on 66 before Chick was out for 32.

Leroy Facey joined Hawes and the pair put about the Haverhill attack, scoring 103 for the second wicket.

Facey contributed with a fine 69 and although Witham lost Wakelin and Headley, Hawes held firm.

After 45 overs he carried his bat for a splendid 82 not out.

Haverhill started their innings dangerously and lost two wickets for six runs.

Both opening bowlers had to come off with strains and Moran and Dellor added 46, before Moran was run out for 20.

This was Witham's only success with Dellor scoring a magnificent 137 not out and Powell scoring 44.

Matt McKendry took the two early wickets for seven runs.
