Braintree shooter Ivan Marzocchi is a county champion after claiming a fine victory at the Essex County Championship, held at Southend Gun Club.

The Olympic Skeet shooter's hard work in the build-up to the competition paid off, after he won the event with the highest score and finished top of his class.

He shot a perfect round of 25 in the final round to take the trophy.

He said: "In the final round I knew I had to relax, let my talent take over and maintain my routine as much as possible."

The championship consisted of 100 clays - with four rounds of 25 each.

Marzocchi made a good start to the competition, after clocking a sub-total of 46 in the first two rounds.

However, a change in the weather conditions in the third round changed matters.

A score of 21 added the pressure in the final round.

But with three scores in equal second place and facing the final round, Marzocchi pulled out the stops to shoot a perfect round of 25 to win the trophy.

Marzocchi has been in impressive form of late.

Last month he scooped silver at the Britannia Grand Prix in Dorchester.

The Pro-coach Shooting School member is continuing his progress in the lead-up to the 2012 Olympics.
