Cressing make it through
Cressing beat Southend 15-9 in the opening round of the Essex Superleague Knockout Cup.
The format changes slightly as eight sets of singles are contested over three legs, with all legs counting.
The early sets went with the throw. Mick Cain overcame Mick Peel 2-1 and Barry Gilbey lost out to John Hayter by the same scoreline.
Stuart Mortimer hit a maximum as he overcame Graham Mills, whilst Al Hedman also hit a maximum he lost out to Bradley Caiger.
With the match score standing at six legs apiece with half of the matches played, the vital set of the evening went the way of Cressing.
Dave Saunders also hit a 180 as he beat Essex player Steve Kiamil 3-0.
At this stage all Cressing required was to win the legs where they started first.
John Mortimer duly obliged against Richard Watering, before Robert Watson-Lang's comfortable 3-0 win against Sam Ayres pushed Cressing over the winning line.
The final set of the evening saw Cressing maintain their supremacy, as Steve Prow won 2-1 against the dangerous Mel Davies.
Cressing now move on to the Chelmsford Social Club tonight, where the rest of the competition will be played.
In the quarter-final Cressing take on Colchester Town, who overcame Walton in their first round match.
