WITHAM boxer Kaan Hawes felt he learned important lessons as he maintained his unbeaten record in the professional ranks with a points victory against Paul Cummings in MTK Global's Battleground show in Brentwood.

The 31-year-old former Witham Town footballer and Witham Cricket Club captain beat Cummings 39-37 on points after a four-round fight last weekend and was pleased to get back to winning ways.

His third bout as a professional had ended in a draw and while it maintained Hawes' unbeaten record, he was still glad to get back to winning ways in beating Cummings and felt he had continued to pick up vital points for his progression as a fighter.

"It was another win and nice to keep things moving along," said Hawes.

"I felt it was a comfortable win, but I know there are things to improve on as I'm never happy with my performance.

"It's all a learning experience, though, and I was glad to get back to winning ways after the draw in my third fight.

"I put myself under a bit of pressure after that fight.

"It wasn't from anyone else, it was from myself as I want to go places as a fighter and I knew it was important to get back to winning ways.

"So I was pleased to get the win this time against a tough and durable opponent.

"It was also good having the four rounds as it's important time in the ring and that's the place you learn the most."

Hawes thanked his coaches Luke Davison and Billy Long at Box 2 Burn gym for their support and said he and his team would now look to set up a fifth professional bout as he was hoping to get one in before the end of the boxing season.

He added: "I want to keep fighting now so I'll be sitting down with my team and looking at options.

"I'm already pencilled in for fights in September and December so there should be at least two more before the end of the year, but I'd like to get another one in by the end of July when the season ends.

"We'll have to see but whatever happens, I'll still be in the gym training hard and sparring over the summer."
