LANCE Akins feels Witham Town’s current form is only the start of what they can achieve.

The Witham central defender scored his second goal of the season as Town beat Cheshunt 3-2 last weekend to extend their unbeaten run to five games in Bostik League division north and he said there is more to come.

“I think we just have to keep the momentum going because it is good at the moment,” said Akins.

“We are progressing with a young side.

“We are winning, but we are still learning and there’s more to come from us.

“The morale is really high in the dressing room now and we feel we can keep pressing and getting results.

“Some people – some big players – have moved on but there are players in there who want to play for this club and that’s the main thing.

“They want to be out on that pitch for Witham Town and we play as a team rather than as a bunch of individuals.

“We have just gone through November undefeated and it would be good to do that again (in December).

“We say that every month we want to pick up at least nine points as that will put you in and around the play-offs, but we’re not looking at the table at the moment.

“We just want to keep enjoying our football and results will come.

“You just have to take it game by game and you know you’ll climb the table.

“We have the quality to do that in the dressing room to get up there and looking at the fixtures coming up, there are winnable games in there.”

Witham will have to wait until the start of next month to continue building, though, as they are without a fixture this weekend.

It will give them time to reflect on their good run and Akins is clearly enjoying his time with the club as he has turned down an approach by a rival division north side to stay at the Village Glass Stadium.

Akins added: “I had a sit down with Flinty (manager Adam Flint) and Robbo (assistant manager James Robinson) last week and they told me about the interest, but I thought it was best for my football to be here at Witham.

“I’m enjoying it at the moment, which is the main thing, and we’re getting results as well, which always helps.”

Boss Flint was delighted to see one of his key players make a statement of loyalty and was keen to show that appreciation last weekend as he asked Akins to wear the captain’s armband for the visit of Cheshunt.

“Lance has turned down some offers to stay with us,” said the Witham manager.

“He has committed to us and I made him captain against Cheshunt.

“I don’t often mention when seven-dayers come in for players, but I did make the point that while some boys have left, he has stayed because we’re on the up.

“He has been loyal and that’s why I made him captain.

“Lance has been immense in the last few games.

“We look dangerous from set pieces now and that’s something we’ve worked at.

“It’s come off for us.”

It was from a set piece that Akins’ goal came last weekend and he feels confident that he can add plenty more to the two that he has now this season.

“It’s not often that I get goals, but I’m targeting more now,” he said.

“I feel I can be a presence at set pieces and with Elliot Ronto and Correy Davidson delivering the ball, you know you’re going to get balls into the right areas.

“You know the ball is going to be where you want it every time and there is going to be a chance to score at every set piece.

“I’ve talked to Robbo about targets and I’d like to get to double figures.

“I’m on two at the moment so there is a long way to go, but it’s good to have a target.”
