WITHAM Bowls Club were pleased to attract new members as they held a successful open day.

The weather was kind for the event and ideal to introduce newcomers to the sport of bowls, with those calling in being very interested and 12 having already signed on.

Meanwhile, Witham's Joan Barrett played Hazel Bradley of Burnham Hillside in the Ladies' County Unbadged Singles and after trailing 12-4 after 11 ends, the Witham bowler won a thrilling match 22-18 at the end of the 29 ends.

The club has been busy with friendly games in recent weeks, with wins against Colchester, Boreham, Burnham Hillside, Great Baddow and Witham Mill Lane.

However, there were losses to South Woodham Walters, Chelmsford, Arclight and Sputniks and Witham's ladies lost to Tiptree in a friendly.

In the Central Midweek Bowling League, Witham's A and B teams have won both their matches in a good start to the season.

In the North West Essex men's league, the Witham A team have lost one and drawn one, while the B team have won one and lost one in a mixed start to their campaigns.

On Sunday, Witham travelled to Southend and had a convincing win, while the Ladies County Triples saw Witham have a good win against Great Baddow but they lost to Tiptree Jobserve in the next round.

In the Top Club competition, Witham lost 4-1 to Saffron Walden.
