IT'S unclear if the fish were affected in some way by storm Doris or were simply not feeding, but the Braintree and Bocking Angling Society match at Notley last Friday was very slow.

One of the greatest mysteries in angling is how it is affected by the weather.

Fish are more active in hot weather and slow down in winter, but pressure plays an important part and although anglers may not understand it, they do blame it for the results.

The match at Notley was the perfect example as it proved a real struggle to get bites, however, Penny Turner showed the men how to do it by landing two carp, one F1 and a few small fish for an easy win with a 12-6-0 total.

Best of the rest was Kevin Howell, who added an F1 to his net of roach and small skimmers for 3-7-0.

There was still plenty of wind on Hill and Black two days later for the club Sweep, but at least there were fish feeding.

Pete Thompson had bream and F1s on the pole and tip on peg t26 to win the match with 29-1-8, just one fish ahead of four other anglers who weighed over 20lb.

Sections (excluding winner): 1 J Derry 23-3-0, 2 A Luetchford 27-9-0.

The club match on Sunday is on Hobbs Croft and the following week back on Hill and Black.
