MANAGER Adam Flint will be looking to ensure his Witham Town players have the right mentality when they kick-start their festive run of games with a trip to Thamesmead Town tomorrow.

Flint was pleased with his team’s application as they drew 1-1 at AFC Hornchurch on Tuesday to move back up to 12th in the Ryman League division north table.

However, he was left frustrated by the previous performance where an under-par showing led to a 1-0 defeat by struggling Great Wakering Rovers.

And Flint knows they need more of Hornchurch and less of Great Wakering when they head to Thamesmead and then host division north leaders Maldon and Tiptree at the Village Glass Stadium on Tuesday.

“It’s consistency that we need and to have the right mentality,” said Flint.

“That’s what we keep driving into them.

“If we’d played like we did at Hornchurch against Great Wakering, we’d have beaten them six-nil.

“It was so much better.

“We seem to up it against better teams and that’s nothing against Great Wakering but we seemed to go out in that game expecting to win.

“Hopefully we can push on from this result at Hornchurch now against Thamesmead on Saturday.

“They’re a team who are down there and who we beat a couple of weeks ago so we have to be right for it because then we’ve got Maldon on Tuesday, who are at the other end of the spectrum.”

Flint was happy to take a point from his team’s midweek trip to the Urchins, especially as the hosts had the better of the first half and led 1-0 at the interval.

However, the Witham boss felt it could have been even better with how they played after the break and was frustrated not to get the benefit of two penalty decisions.

He said: “Before the game at Hornchurch, had we been offered a point, I think we’d have taken it.

“They beat Ware four-nil last weekend and we were coming off a horrendous display against Great Wakering.

“But when we play the better teams, we seem to up our game.

“Hornchurch will be up there at the end of the season so we’ll take a point.

“We should have had two penalties, one in the first half and then one in the second half which was 100 per cent a penalty in my opinion and we’d have won the game from there had we got it.

“But there were positives to take.

“It’s a point at a hard place to go and we went a goal down as well.

“After Saturday, that could have mentally done us but we upped our game and could have won on another day.”
