THE Braintree-based Imi-Jishin-Ryou Karate-Do Club is celebrating its first-ever black belt grading success after student Richard Hall attained the landmark level.

Having started the Imi-Jishin-Ryou Karate-Do Club in 2010, instructor and former world karate champion Ashley Aldworth was delighted to see Hall's dedication rewarded by grading up to his black belt.

The 26-year-old had to perform the basic techniques on the Shodan syllabus in kata (pre-arranged forms) and kumite (sparring) over a three-and-a-half hour exam.

Hall said: "I feel that I’ve finally done something; finally achieved something I’ve worked hard for.

"Dedicate time to a hobby and that hobby turns into your passion, and that passion has pushed me to become the first Imi-Jishin-Ryou black belt."
