HEYBRIDGE SWIFTS boss Jody Brown believes his close-season signings can have a huge impact this year.

The Scraley Road side have retained the majority of last season’s squad, while also making key signings like former Premier League star Glen Little, ex-Colchester United hero Karl Duguid, Joss Neale, Callum Leahy, Riley Baker and Reece Grant.

The former is the most eye-catching, having played hundreds of matches in the professional game, including spells at Burnley, Reading and Portsmouth.

“Glen is going to be absolutely instrumental this season,” said Brown. “He’s got so much quality and didn’t lose the ball once in his first two-and-a-half games during pre-season.

“His quality shines through and he inspires the players around him.

“You can see the difference he makes when he’s on the pitch and, as a team, he lifts us by 10 per cent.

“It’s not just what he does with the ball but also the fact he’s so vocal – talking and encouraging the boys. He gives them belief.

“I’ve got to manage him carefully and be careful not to burn him out. He’s probably played a thousand games of football, so I can’t push him to play three times a week.”

Brown is very happy with his other signings and has high hopes for midfielder Leahy, a summer acquisition from Basildon United.

“He’s really caught the eye,” said the Swifts boss. “He’s maybe a bit ahead of where I thought he was.

“I thought he’d come in and add competition, but his performances during pre-season – both in matches and in training – have almost made him the first name on the team sheet.

“Riley is a young defender who has shown a tremendous attitude and work ethic, really catching the eye in pre-season.

“He’s big, strong and has lots of potential, being able to play anywhere across the back four.

“Reece is a bright, quick and left-footed front man.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do and he’ll certainly add another dimension to our attacking play.”

Swifts began their Ryman League division north campaign with a 2-1 defeat at Thamesmead Town on Saturday.

They conceded a last-gasp winner but will be hoping to make amends when they play host to Great Wakering Rovers tonight.

Elsewhere tonight, BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT are at home to VCD Athletic, MALDON & TIPTREE go to Norwich United and WITHAM TOWN are at home to Bury Town.
