Alex Lynn feels experience will be a key strength for him as he begins his bid to claim a coveted GP2 Series title.

The 22-year-old racing driver from Dunmow will be on track in Spain today in his DAMS Racing car as the GP2 Series starts at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.

Practice is due to take place this morning, with qualifying in the afternoon ahead of the feature race on Saturday and the sprint event on Sunday.

It will be Lynn’s second season in the series that is widely regarded as being one of the chief pathways into Formula One.

He is already development driver with the Williams Martini Racing F1 team, but wants a full race seat and knows claiming the title this year would be a huge step towards that.

Lynn finished sixth in his rookie campaign last year and admitted that there were things that didn’t always go as he had wanted, but he feels the experience gained can be a massive factor in being successful in 2016.

“Things are looking really good,” Lynn told the Braintree and Witham Times.

“Myself, the team and the car are in great shape.

“I’ve spent a lot of time with DAMS and I’m confident in the set-up of the car and can’t wait to get on the track racing.

“It’s great going into the season for the second year running in the same championship and with the same team.

“The main strength I feel I have this year in comparison to last is experience - I know the championship, the team and many of the circuits so I feel in a pretty strong position.

“The engineers at DAMS have worked hard to analyse the data from last year and tweak the car and I’ve learnt how I can improve “Staying focused is absolutely key; I made some silly errors last year that could have been avoided so I’m determined to rectify those mistakes this year.

“I’ve spent a lot of time in the off-season working on fitness and I feel I’m in the best shape of my life.

“I’ve made no secret of my aim for this season, to win the championship, and I think we are in a pretty good position to be real contenders.

“The key for success is to remain focused for the whole season, and be competitive at each race.

“Always learning is really important too, and myself and the team will be working hard after each race to look at the data and see where improvements can be made.” Lynn’s commitments don’t end with the GP2 races in Barcelona and he is excited to have been picked by the Williams team to perform day one of F1 testing at the circuit next week.

“After the GP2 race I’ll be testing with Williams on day one which is fantastic,” he added.

“GP2 is my focus for this year but the ultimate dream is Formula One so I’m honoured that Williams has given me this opportunity to test the FW38 alongside Felipe Massa.”
