RAYNE Swan Petanque Club held their first open competition of the year, with England players Sofiane Lachani and Sean Prendergast living up to their billing as one of the favourites.

They eased through the knockout stages with three wins, as did league two winners Dawn Bourquin and Aris Savvides and David Plumhoff and Matt Eversden in league three, while Ross Jones and Reece Gould were top of league four.

Local players Dean Little and Keith Flack looked to be causing an upset when 11-4 up against Lachani and Prendergast, but the favourites plugged away and ended up 13-12 winners on their way to a final against Plumhoff and Eversden.

The final could have gone either way, but it was Lachani and Prendergast who took home the £300 prize money with a 13-9 win.

The Plate final was won by Francois Bourquin and Paul McNeil, Consolage winners being Naheb Khodabux and Colin Roper.
