Adam Flint hopes he and his team have given Witham Town’s board plenty of food for thought as they start to think of who their manager will be next season.

Flint has been Witham’s caretaker boss since the departure of Garry Kimble in February and took over with them in peril of getting sucked backwards into the Ryman League division north relegation zone.

Having stepped up into the role after seeing notable success as a Sunday League boss, Flint, together with assistant James Robinson and coach Curtis Whyte, was charged with safeguarding the team’s status with nine games to go.

And following defeat for rivals Waltham Abbey last weekend and the points that Witham have picked up themselves, that has now been achieved with two games still to be played.

Town start those remaining fixtures with tonight’s rearranged derby at Maldon & Tiptree, which was postponed due to a waterlogged Park Drive pitch last weekend, and conclude with Saturday’s home finale against Cheshunt (kick-off 3pm).

With safety assured, Flint now wants his team to finish the campaign positively and he admits he would love to be given the chance to continue at the helm next season.

He said: “It was nice at quarter to five on Saturday when we realised we were safe.

“I said when I came in that I thought 42 points would be needed to guarantee safety and that’s how it has panned out, but it’s nice to have got over the line.

“We had nine games to keep us up and we’ve gone and done it in seven.

“I feel we came in with a winning mentality, which was important.

“The club had won just twice in the 18 games before we came in, but we looked to bring the winning mentality back in and get belief back into the changing room.

“We had nothing to lose as I think people expected us to go down and having come in from Sunday football, people didn’t know me, but we didn’t lose in our first three games in charge.

“It was important for us to do well as people were asking who I was when I came in.

“It has been a massive learning curve, but I want to bring the good times back to Witham as I feel this can be a really big club.

“It is the club’s decision (over the permanent manager’s position).

“We were asked to do a job when we came in and if they want us back next season then I’m sure new targets will be given to us.

“We’ll keep going until the end of this season and see what happens then.

“It’s nice that the pressure is off a bit in the last two games, but there’s still a lot to play for.

“If we’re still here, then people will need to show they want to be part of our plans and even if we’re not, they still have to make a name for themselves to whoever comes in.

“There’s a big local derby at Maldon tonight and then the game at home on Saturday and it would be great to go out with two more wins.”

Flint said Damien Green would miss the trip to Maldon and probably the home fixture against Cheshunt with an ankle injury.
