Braintree Rugby Club saw any lingering hopes of Essex League division one promotion killed off in their penultimate fixture of the season as they lost a tight game 30-27 against Maldon.

Joint coach Brian Joslin couldn’t fault his players, but said felt a decision by the officials to allow a try when they felt the Maldon winger’s foot had gone into touch in the build-up cost his team, and the absence of regular kicker Kingsley Joslin was also a big factor.

Joslin said: “Maldon are the best all-round side we’ve played in Essex One and it’s hard to see why they aren’t pushing for promotion “That said, one key decision went against us, which cost us seven points, and the fact our regular place-kicker was missing also cost us dearly. We only managed to convert one of our five tries whereas Maldon converted two of their four and notched two penalties.

“There were still a lot of positives from the game, though.

“Tom Drew and Will Turner both had strong games and there were some great line breaks by Joss Adams and Glen Whyatt.

“Forwards Stevie Sewell and Wes Apps were industrious all game and our set-piece functioned well, but I can’t fault any of the players.

“This result proves we are playing at the right level, despite what has been claimed, and a lot work and commitment will needed if we are to make the step-up.”

Joint coach David Gilder singled out youngsters Will Turner and Tom Drew for praise from the Maldon game and said with the club’s academy side doing well the future looked bright for Braintree.

Braintree will be looking to finish a stop-start season on a high when they entertain Canvey Island at Robbs Wood on April 16.
