Braintree Town manager Danny Cowley may have received some friendly advice from Cheltenham Town boss Gary Johnson, but he’ll be hoping that his team can repay it by beating the Robins tonight.

Cowley said the former Bristol City and Yeovil Town manager has helped him out with scouting advice a few times in the past, but there is unlikely to be too much assistance proffered when the Iron head to Cheltenham in the Vanarama National League today.

Their trip to Whaddon Road will see Cowley’s team looking to extend their unbeaten run of away games to seven, after Saturday’s 2-0 win at Eastleigh took their recent haul to 16 points from a possible 18 on the road.

However, Cheltenham were operating in League Two last season and Cowley won’t let his players get complacent after their recent run of away form.

He said: “You can’t get too high when you’re winning and you can’t get too low when you lose because the games come thick and fast.

“Now we play a Cheltenham side who are a former Football League side with a really experienced manager, who has been really good to me.

“I’ve picked the phone up to Gary Johnson on numerous occasions and he’s helped us in regard to analysis of oppositions so I look forward to meeting him in person.

“But it will be a tough challenge.”

Cowley was pleased with his team’s win at Eastleigh, but was happier with their first-half display.

The Iron boss would have prefered to see his players be a bit more offensive after they established a two-goal lead at the Silverlake Stadium, but admitted that sitting back a bit they may have kept more in the tank for tonight’s fixture.

He added: “We didn’t give up too many chances, which was pleasing, but I’d still like us to control the game more when we’re leading two-nil.

“We looked to see the game out rather than enjoy it.

“Our play in the first half was good; our mobility was good and we passed the ball well, ut I would have liked to have continued taking the game to them.

“However, the good thing is that we’ve probably conserved some energy for Tuesday.”
