Jake Wakelin led from the front as the captain’s aggressive century helped Witham Cricket Club keep their perfect start to the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship division one season going.

The skipper’s 67-ball ton helped Witham ease to a ten-wicket victory against Halstead as they built on an impressive earlier display with the ball and means they will head into today’s game at Frinton seconds looking to record a fifth straight victory.

Having only won five games all season last year, it’s understandable that Witham are feeling confident at the moment, but Wakelin knows that’s it’s important that they don’t lift their foot off the gas.

He said: “It was another nice win and while you can never say it’s easy, it was fairly comfortable.

“That’s great as winning is a good habit to have.

“When you have a bad start to the season, things just seem to go against you, but it’s going our way at the moment and it feels like we’re going in the right direction.

“The last three games we’ve chased down 190 for the loss of two wickets against Coggeshall, then 200 for three against Hadleigh and now 130 for nought against Halstead.

“They are established teams that we’ve been beating and we haven’t just limped over the line, we have been so dominant.

“We just want to keep the confidence levels high and not make mistakes so we’ll be working hard in training again this week and looking to go again at Frinton.”
