New manager Danny Cowley says the character of players is the key to his plans to build his Braintree Town squad.

Cowley has been working tirelessly with his assistant manager and brother Nicky to work out what he wants from his squad in the two weeks since taking the helm at the Iron.

And he is delighted that the majority of last year’s players have already committed themselves to the club for another campaign.

“We’ve been trying to audit the club and see where we are so far,” said the new Braintree manager.

“It’s been a bit manic, but it’s been very purposeful and we’ve had a chance to speak to all the players collectively and individually.

“It’s mainly been about just listening to them and getting their perceptions of the season, where they’ve had success and ways to improve.

“Nicky and I have now watched about 30 of the 46 games from last season on DVD so we have a good idea.

“We’ve spoken to all the players now and the ones that are 100 per cent about coming back are Nathan McDonald, Matt Paine, Remy Clerima, Kenny Davis, Dan Sparkes, Simeon Akinola, Sean Marks, Jordan Cox and Charlie Strutton.

“There are also the young Academy lads Joe Maybanks and George Pullen."
