Bikers complete with leathers, helmets and boots descended on Braintree Golf Club with the roar of their machines providing a suitable backdrop as Gary Mills drove-in as the new captain.

The Widow Sons from the Iceni Harley Davidson Chapter escorted Mills to the 16th tee after departing captain, Andrew Cuthbertson, had putted out on the 15th.

Mills is a member of the Chapter and sent his drive 124 yards to the cheers of a large group of club members.

“It was not the drive I would have wanted and I hope it is not the shape of things to come,” he said.

“Seeing my fellow bikers turning up was totally unexpected and it followed a superb turnout for the annual captain versus the vice-captain’s match.”

A total of 24 games of 18-hole matchplay saw the captain’s team come out as 47-30 winners.

“I feel honoured and excited to be captain of Braintree,” added Mills.

“A lot of effort has been put in for the drive-in, particularly from my vice-captain, Kevin Smith, and lady captain, Toni Brockwell, making it a memorable day.”
