A new set of arrows proved spot-on for archery ace Imogen Newby has the Braintree Bowmen youngster added yet another title to her rapidly-expanding list of achievements in the sport.

The ten-year-old was competing at the Southern Counties Archery Association Indoor Championships at Crawley in West Sussex and came away as the new SCAS Junior Ladies Under-12 Recurve champion.

Newby made a slow start but gradually found her feet with her new equipment and began to rack up the high scores that brought her the title.

She said: “I decided to shoot with my new arrows and not the old ones I had been using all season, but I started with 50, 49 and the 47 and I was not pleased.

“I was starting to get frustrated with myself, knowing I can shoot better, but after a few calming breathing exercises, I turned the tide in my mind and shot 56, 52, 52.

“This continued until the end, scoring above 53 an end and 13 golds to achieve 522 out of a possible 600 points to become the SCAS Junior Ladies Under-12 Recurve champion.”

Newby was joined at Crawley by another ten-year-old Braintree Bowmen junior, Sydney Strugnell, who was taking part in her first major tournament.

Despite the inevitable nerves, Strugnell started exceptionally well, hitting 49, 48 and 49 for the first 18 arrows and went on to score 433 to claim the SCAS Junior Ladies Under-12 silver medal.
