Braintree Town manager Alan Devonshire has said he will use his team’s new-found Vanarama Conference Premier safety to have a look at some new squad options.

The Iron made their place in the top-flight of non-league football secure for a fourth year when beating Nuneaton Town 1-0 on Monday to make it mathematically impossible for them to get relegated this year.

And while he still wants them to finish their year on a high with further wins from their final four games, Devonshire said he will make at least one alteration to his starting line-up for tomorrow’s visit to the Miles Smith Stadium of Aldershot Town – in goal.

Having sat on the bench for every one of Braintree’s 42 league games so far this season, former Colchester United keeper Carl Pentney will get his chance to impress in place of Nick Hamann.

Devonshire said: “Carl Pentney will definitely get a start on Saturday.

“It’s nothing against Nick at all, but as soon as we had the points to be safe I knew that I wanted to try things out.

“I’ll be alternating the boys for the remaining four games so they’ll both get a couple of games now.

“It will allow me to have a look at Carl as he has had to be patient all year.”
