For the second time in less than a week John Watson proved to be Witham Town's last-gasp goal-scoring hero as they took an impressive point at Ryman League premier division leaders Maidstone United.

Just as he had done in Witham's 1-1 draw against Canvey Island on Tuesday, the Witham stalwart popped up with a late equalising goal to leave their fans celebrating and their team outside the top-flight's drop zone once again.

There could be few more impressive results among the non-league programme up and down the country and Witham's fightback showed courage and determination in front of a crowd of 1,865 in Kent.

There have been plenty of occasions this season when late goals have robbed Witham of valuable points in their first season at this level, but they have now been on the other end of it in back-to-back games.

Heading into the final moments of the game, the visitors still trailed to Jay May's goal that Maidstone had scored late in the first half.

However, just as they had done against Canvey, they kept pushing until the final whistle and Watson popped up to fire in an equaliser in the 89th minute.

It gave Witham a point that could prove invaluable at the end of the season and was enough to lift them back out of the relegation places ahead of Tuesday's home game against Harrow Borough.
