Witham Town midfielder Tom Wraight has been impressing the onlooking management team at Ipswich Town during his trial with the Championship side.

The 20-year-old was handed a trial with the Blues last week after some superb displays for Witham this season caught the eye of watching scouts.

After a few days training with the Suffolk club under the gaze of boss Mick McCarthy and his team, Wraight was placed into their under-21 side for a game against Millwall on Monday.

He only played the first 15 minutes as he came off with a back problem, but Witham boss Garry Kimble said he had been told that Wraight did enough to impress in that time and could line-up for the Blues’ under-21s when they face Crystal Palace next week.

Kimble said: “Tom only lasted 15 minutes and had to come off because of his back, but they have said they liked what they had seen.

“He’s going to play on Tuesday (against Crystal Palace) for them when his back has cleared up.

“Hopefully he’ll be OK for us on Saturday, but we’ll see.

“I can’t stand in the lad’s way as he’s different class.

“He deserves his chance.

“He has a great left foot and left-footers are very hard to come by.

“What they liked about him was he went up against (Danny) Shittu for Millwall and didn’t hold back.

“They liked what they saw in that 15 minutes and hopefully he’ll play on Tuesday against Crystal Palace and we’ll see how he does.”

Kimble said he may be cautious about playing Wraight in Witham’s Ryman League premier division game at Maidstone on Saturday as he wouldn’t want to aggrevate his back problem.

He added: “It’s down to the lad if he wants to play and we’ll see how his back is.”

Wraight did have a trial at Conference Premier side Barnet last summer, before returning to Witham, but Witham assistant manager Brad King confirmed that several other Football League clubs are also looking at their midfielder.

He added: “Ipswich were the first to make a formal move, but there are others who have been making enquiries about his progress.”
