Newly-promoted Phoenix Ladies put on a five-star show in the second half of their season’s opener against Romford in the premier division of the Essex Women's League.

Phoenix were kicking themselves at half-time as they were 1-0 down against a side who they knew they should be beating easily.

There was skill in abundance from the hosts, but too much respect for an opponent that had been in the higher league last year and it was clear that any turnaround would need more physical application.

Operating with far more belief, skill and overall fitness, Phoenix found their wings in the second half with a five-goal blitz.

At times they played their hosts off the park with great hockey and there were some great first-team debuts from some of their younger players.

However, the game was marred by two controversial goals. One was awarded after the whistle had been blown while another hit the back board on a short corner but only as a deflection.

The first one stood for the visitors, the second was disallowed for a dismayed home side, but this was the last chance for Romford, who ultimately had no answer to the youthful exuberance of a fine Phoenix side.
