Witham Town know they haven’t got what they deserved from their last two Ryman League premier division games so they will be looking to get back to winning ways when they host East Thurrock United tonight.

Despite strong performances against Margate and Billericay Town, Witham paid the price for not taking their chances in front of goal and lapses in concentration at the back as they came away with no points.

It has seen them drop to 19th in the premier division table and assistant boss Brad King knows they have to be better at both ends of the pitch.

He said: “We’ve still had a good start to the season, but losing a couple of games means we’ve moved towards an area of the table that we don’t want to be in.

“I’m not concerned by that, though, as our performances have been strong and opposing managers have said we’re the best footballing side they have faced this year.

“But we have to learn to be more clinical in front of goal as you can’t have ten chances and only score one of them.

“We also need to be more focused at the other end because that has cost us as well.

“The top clubs at this level put a lot of their budget into players at the top end who will get them 30-odd goals a year, so you have to be stay sharp at the back and not give sides space because they will take their chances.”

The game tonight will be Witham’s first in the league for two weeks after their previous two games were postponed.

Saturday’s home fixture against Kingstonian had to be put back after torrential rainfall flooded the Village Glass Stadium pitch and while it may have given some Witham players the extra rest they needed to return from injuries, King said it was still frustrating.

He added: “No-one could have foreseen the rain that we had and they’ve worked hard on the pitch so it should be fine for tonight “We had a couple out and we may still have some key players out, but we’re hoping that Saturday’s postponement may have given a few a chance to return.”

King said Shamido Pedulu, Josh Mayhew and Kurt Smith had all been struggling with knee problems and would have their fitnesses tested ahead of the game.
