Witham Cricket Club skipper Leroy Facey said he and his players will sit down soon to review their season and see where they can improve for next year.

Facey admitted that it had been a difficult campaign in Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship division one, but it ended with Witham preserving their top flight status in the closing weeks of the season.

It concluded with an eight-wicket defeat at Frinton, who successfully retained their division one title with their win, but the season has been marked by difficulties with player availability and Facey said it is something the club will try to address before the start of next season.

He said: “There was relief that we had done enough to get over the line and survive, but there were mixed emotions because it has been a difficult year.

“We’ve had some very disappointing performances and sandwiched in there have been some when the cricket has been very good.

“That’s been the problem really – consistency – and we’ve struggled to put together a run of good performances.

“I think that’s been down to availability and selection hasn’t been great this year.

“We aren’t a massive club in terms of adult numbers and if availability isn’t good for whatever reason then it can be hard for us, especially if they are important players missing as there has been at times this year.

“Hopefully it’s something we can work on over the winter."
