Braintree Town felt they were the only team trying to win their Skrill Premier clash against Gateshead but they were ultimately left frustrated at the final whistle as it ended 0-0.

The hosts had the better of the chances and dominated throughout, but it was the north-east side who were probably more satisfied with the point that both got.

Dan Holman’s 82nd minute penalty was the closest either came to breaking the deadlock, but the Iron striker, who has been so deadly in front of goal recently, saw his kick pushed away by Gateshead keeper Adam Bartlett.

So in the end it was frustration for the hosts as they stayed just outside the top five, while Gateshead held on to their own play-off position.

Midfielder Matt Paine said: “We have gone out there trying to win it while all they wanted was a point and that was what they got.

“We were hard to break down at the back, but we had chances at the other end.

“One of those was a golden one, but unfortunately it just didn’t go for us.”

And that was a sentiment echoed by Devonshire. He added: “I thought we were the only team trying to win the game.

“We had good chances and a penalty near the end, but I don’t think they had a shot.

“They defended well, but it’s about winning a game of football.

“I’m disappointed, but not in the effort that the lads gave as they were fantastic.

“We were the better side as far as I was concerned.

“They came for a point and that’s what they got, but I felt we deserved three as we were the only team trying to win the game.”
