LEIGH-ON-SEA captain Dean Waller has payback on his mind when Hainault & Clayhall visit Chalkwell Park tomorrow.

Waller’s team were bowled out for just 92 when the teams met on the opening day of the Shepherd Neame Division Two season, losing by 167 runs.

That match was seemingly an indication as to how Leigh’s season would go, as they currently find themselves embroiled in a relegation scrap and second-from-bottom.

Leigh were beaten by bottom side Wickford last weekend, but Waller is looking to move past that defeat by beating sixth-placed Hainault & Clayhall.

“We play Hainault tomorrow and they gave us a right tonking in the first game so it would be good to put that right,” said Waller, who has hit back-to-back centuries in his last two matches. “We need to pick up a win and get ourselves out of this position.

“One of the good things about the division this year is, even though we are getting beat, other teams are not moving away from us.

“A win tomorrow could see us move up a few places and that would be a relief.

“It is a big weekend and a match we all want to do well in.”

Old Southendian & Southchurch were also beaten last weekend and they now face an uphill battle to get back in touch with the top three.

They host Harlow Town, who are just one place and six points below them in the standings, knowing a win will be vital if they are to regain touch at the top.

A total of 39 points now separates the Old Boys from the promotion positions, although with the top two facing each other tomorrow, it is a golden chance for Aaron Lucas’ team to close the gap.

Horndon-on-the-Hill welcome Wickford in a massive game at the bottom of the division.

Wickford are just 14 points below Horndon and will be buoyed by back-to-back victories, including against Leigh last weekend, while Horndon are heading in the opposition direction.

Horndon have lost three on the bounce and will be desperate for the points.
