ESSEX all-rounder Tom Westley has aspirations to follow the same route as Jason Roy, James Vince and Sam Billings and use the England programmes as a stepping stone to a senior call-up.

Last winter Westley joined Vince, Roy and Billings on the England Performance Programme for a batting and spin camp in Sri Lanka.

Since then the 26-year-old has seen his fellow batsmen secure regular places in England limited-overs squads.

Now he is hoping to continue in their footsteps by impressing in England Lions’ T20 series decider against Pakistan A today.

“James Vince played for England last year, Jason Roy has played for England, Sam Billings – they were all with us in Sri Lanka last winter,” said Westley.

“You can see the path and hopefully if you put some performances in, you put your name in the hat for selection.”

Westley, also an emerging off-spinner, has thrown himself into England contention after an impressive return with the bat for Essex over the last two years.

He has not looked back since breaking into the side in 2014, becoming a reliable run-scorer at the top of the order in all formats.

Having racked up 3,068 runs in the previous two seasons, Westley also proved he had the credentials to compete on the international stage by hitting a century against the touring Australians at the Essex County Ground last July.

“I am very pleased with how I have progressed in the last two years,” he said. “I think it is quite exciting because I have got a lot to give and improve on.

“It has been nice to have consistency with those performances and obviously the hundred against Australia was a special, special moment.

“My one-day cricket for Essex has been consistent for a couple of years now. I think I am making strides in the right direction, hopefully I can continue that this winter and next year also.”

Westley, however, has not made the impact he would have liked for the Lions in the Middle East so far.

In his four innings he has averaged just 8.24 with the bat coming in at number three, with a top score of 13.

So he will be wanting to end the tour on a high with an important innings in the decider in Dubai today.
