WITHAM Town manager Adam Flint said he is “chuffed” to have seen his team surpass the Bostik League division north points target that he set for them before the start of the campaign with a game still to play.

Wins against Brentwood Town last Thursday and Maldon and Tiptree on Tuesday have take Witham to 62 points and past the 60-point mark that Flint had set out for his players to reach.

That means they have passed their points tally from last season and the progress his team has made has pleased the Town boss and he now wants them to go out on a high when they host Tilbury at the Village Glass Stadium on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

The 2-0 win they had at Maldon in midweek took Witham back up to 11th in the division north table and a win against the Dockers could take them into the top ten in the final standings, so flint hopes they can finish on another high.

“That’s 62 points we’ve got now and I’m really chuffed with that,” said Flint.

“It means we can relax a bit now on Saturday and really enjoy the day as we try to get into the top ten.

“Getting over the 60-point mark means a lot as we set that as a target at the start of the season and within the budget constraints that we have, I think we’ve done very well indeed.

“We’re not the biggest payers in the league, but we have competed with the best.

“I know we lost 6-1 to AFC Hornchurch the other day, but we beat them earlier in the season and they’ve gone on to become champions so it shows we’ve been competitive with anyone.

“It was good to beat Maldon in the week as they’ve been pushing for the play-offs and I thought we were really unlucky not to get something at Haringey Borough on Saturday.

“We had a goal disallowed and other chances and they broke away and scored, but we pushed them hard and they are a team who people have been touting for the play-offs as well so it shows where we are.

“If everyone stays together for next year then I think what we have achieved this year shows that we have a great chance of doing well again.

“It’s been especially pleasing seeing the younger players come through and I think that shows the future is looking good at Witham.

“Our two centre halves at Maldon - Pat (Ahern) and Jack (Kemsley) - both came through the club’s ranks and then there was Luke Mallett and Kofi Gyebi, who have come through the (Braintree Town Academy) that is based at Witham and Chi (Chinedu Osadebe) has come through the under-18s.

“I think the club are really pleased with how it has gone and the future looks really good.

“The only shame was the run of poor results (12 games without a win in September and October) when we weren’t able to pick up points.

“Had we not dropped points then, we could have been even better off and we have to look at that for next year, but it is a great achievement to have done what we have this year.”

A key part of Witham’s success this year has been the number of times their defensive unit have shut out opposing strike forces.

The latest came at Maldon on Tuesday and Flint said keeper Bobby Mason had played a big part in that notable achievement.

He added: “The clean sheet at Maldon took our tally up to 14 for the season and that’s been another great achievement that we should be proud of.

“Bobby has done a great job for us in goal and those clean sheets have been a key part of what we have done.”
