COLCHESTER Rovers Cycle Club's under-16 cyclist Jake Crossley enjoyed his best result of the season to date at the CC Hackney’s Primavera series.

The teenager claimed his debut win at this level, after impressing at the feared Hog Hill circuit at Redbridge Cycling Centre.

Crossley said: “It's a great result given that I'm still only first year as under-16, so I'm very happy.”

The series moved from its usual Lee Valley Velopark outdoor circuit home to the Hog Hill circuit, as riders took on a challenging lap which took in an ascent of the so-called Hoggenberg.

In the under-16 race, it was a typically quick start and the peloton grouped tightly, with riders packed together.

As the race developed, a few riders made an attack with Lee Valley Youth CC's Harrison Powell pushing ahead.

Rovers’ Crossley was in the group when this happened and decided to try to bridge the gap.

He attacked and managed to get over to Powell in a break of two.

Both riders started to push ahead and worked together to get a big lead on the group.

As the race neared the finale, it started to heat up and a few attacks were made, both between the two leaders and amongst the chasers.

On the last lap, Crossley attacked on the back straight to try and get a gap but the small opening was soon neutralised by Powell at the bottom of the hill.

However, Crossley decided to go again and started his sprint early, enough to gain a small gap of about a second which he held to the line to claim victory.
