CLACTON Cricket Club captain Ryan Chamberlain is setting his sights on promotion - and believes the team are gathering momentum after shaking off some “early-season rust”.

The Seasiders moved to within 12 points of top spot in Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship division two after Saturday’s crushing 157-run victory at home to Kelvedon and Feering.

It came hot on the heels of the previous weekend’s success at north Essex rivals Copford.

And it helped blow away the cobwebs after losing two of their opening three fixtures.

“After a shaky start, and a bit of early-season rust, I’m very pleased with how things are going now,” said Chamberlain.

“We’ve found our feet and been able to field a more consistent side, which makes a big difference.

“Everyone understands their role and we’ve pulled off two important wins in the last fortnight.

“We’re showing what we’re capable of and, having been unfortunate not to get promoted last season, I’d certainly like to think we’ll be challenging near the top this year.

“All the boys feel the same way and, on our day, we’re capable of beating anyone in the division.

“It’s more competitive this year than last but we have to believe we can compete for top spot.

“We want to get the club back where we believe it should be.”

Openers Imran Sheikh and Facey paved the foundations for victory on Saturday, scoring 95 and 86 respectively.

Lewis Kirk and Chamberlain then took three wickets apiece, with the latter managing his at the expense of just five runs in three overs - two of which were maidens.

“Everyone has played their part but there have certainly been some important individual performances,” said former Cann Hall Primary School and Clacton Coastal Academy student Chamberlain.

“Imran has done amazingly well and been consistent for years, since the club’s East Anglian Premier League era.

“(New Australian overseas player) Haydn (Erfurth) is another worthy of mention because he’s settled in well and shown a great work ethic.

“It’s taken time to adjust but he certainly looks the part and it’s only a matter of time before he scores his first century."
