CHELMSFORD II 0

COLCHESTER 6

East Men’s League division two

RELEGATED Colchester bid farewell to division two with an emphatic victory at Chelmsford II, on the final day of the campaign.

Both clubs will play in division three after a disappointing season but Colchester at least ensured that they finished on a high note, with a big win.

Colchester captain Dean Campbell said: “Everyone wanted to finish the season well, like we would any other season.

“It was probably the last time that this group of players will play together and it was a lot of fun.

“We felt a bit bad for Chelmsford because they caught us in one of those moods.”

Colchester were the better team in the first half but only had one goal to show for their efforts at the break.

Toby Waddington struck a fierce drag-flick from a penalty corner which sailed past a group of players and into the corner, leaving the keeper with no chance.

Colchester had lots of other opportunities to add to their lead before half-time, with the hosts’ defence vulnerable.

They doubled their advantage just after the break through Waddington’s second of the match, another drag flick that flew into the goal.

Skipper Campbell then made it 3-0 with a fine break that saw Colchester go from their own circle to the Chelmsford goal in four passes.

Campbell provided the finishing touch to the move, after being fed by Richard Sexton.

Ben Parker then scored Colchester’s fourth against his former club before Sexton, who finished as their top scorer with nine goals, got on the scoresheet himself.

Lloyd Dennis wrapped up the visitors’ convincing win when he converted player-of-the-match Campbell’s assist, from the top right of the circle.

Colchester’s second team will secure the division five title if they beat Brentwood III on Saturday, in their final match of the season.

They won 12-0 at the Garrison against relegated Colchester III, who will play their hockey in division six next season.
