FC CLACTON are setting their sights on a “amazing, tremendous achievement” – a top-half finish to the season.

The Seasiders are 13th in the Thurlow Nunn League premier division heading into Saturday’s home showdown against Swaffham Town.

They are two points behind ninth-placed Hadleigh United, but only just clear of a pack of clubs, including visitors Swaffham, in 16th.

Coyle says his players therefore have a major incentive during the final third of the campaign.

“We’re setting our sights on the top half of the table and that would be a fantastic place to be,” he said.

“It would be amazing and a tremendous achievement.

“We’re seen as a bottom three-side every year, but this season we’ve been competitive throughout.

“Saturday’s game is now the biggest of our season, in my opinion.

“If we win, we can really pull away from the bottom sides – and potentially into the top half.

“Other sides down there are playing each other and it’s an opportunity to really move away from danger.

“But if we lose, we could get drawn back into the mix.

“We set out to win every game, regardless of who we’re playing.

“However, we’re also very aware of what one win or one defeat could do.”

Depending on their result and scores elsewhere, Clacton could overhaul the likes of Hadleigh, Brantham, Gorleston and Haverhill Rovers on Saturday.

All four have 30 points, compared to Clacton’s tally of 28.

The Seasiders will also be looking to follow up their 6-4 victory at Walsham-le-Willows, in their last Thurlow Nunn League outing.

Last week’s game at Haverhill was postponed.

“It’s so important to build on that win and beat another of the sides down there in the table,” said Coyle.

“It’ll be a waste if we’re not able to do that and that’s why this game is so important.

“The players know that.

“They understand the importartance and the prospect of finishing in the top half is a real carrot for them.”

Coyle will be without the unavailable Max Kirby but hopes to be able to recall Kieran Ayling (ankle).

Chris Ribchester, who scored for the reserves last week, could also be involved.

“He makes a massive difference and gives everyone in the team confidence,” added Coyle.
