SOME big hitting helped to determine the winners of Playgolf Colchester’s Texas Scramble.

The team of Mick Seaman, Tom English and Sam Durrant won at a canter with a superior score of nett 60.3.

The trio benefited from big hitters finding the fairway and with three chances to pepper the pin.

And with a pair of single-figure players and another in-form player heading the same way, it was more of a case of what their winning score would be.

Their winning card included a super eight birdies and they could even afford a dropped shot on the par-three, fifth hole.

The competition saw a large field turn out, assisted by receptive greens and deceptive pace for the time of year.

Only a single shot separated the second and third-placed teams.

Adrian Binns, Alex Crawford and Dave Wills were runners-up with a score of nett 62.9, just ahead of Christos and Elias Fantousi with Calum McKenzie (nett 63.9).

A large field of seniors competed in Playgolf’s New Years Cup medal format competition.

The good course conditions helped those players who managed to find the fairway off the tee.

Geoffrey Backhouse (12) won with a solid gross 84 (nett 72), with his card including six pars.

A nett 74 helped David Needham (18) finish second following a pair of pars and a fine par-three birdie, on the third hole.

Four players all carded nett 75 and had to be separated by countback.

Greg King (22) took the decision with a better back-nine score from Brian Ruffell (26), Steve Turner (13) and Don Miller (14).
