FROSTY conditions faced competitors in round four of Maldon Golf Club’s Ben Volta Winter League.

Sunday’s format was a pairs, betterball stableford competition played off three-quarter handicap allowance and the chilling breeze made for testing conditions in the early stages.

Dan Gardner and Chris Ryan secured their maiden victory with a score of 41 points.

Second place went to Keith Locke and Aaron Dickson on 40 with league leaders Pete Hawkins and Martyn Cook claiming third spot with 38.

John Dormon and Steve Lawrence took fourth place on 37 while Lenny Blagden and Ian Ladkin were fifth with 36.

The nearest-the-pin prizes went to Glenn Mann on the par three fifth/14th and Alan Buckingham for the closest second shot to the par four sixth/15th.

On Friday, past-captain Keith Locke hosted another of his ever-popular quiz nights at Maldon’s Club house. Around 90 competitors in 15 teams packed the room to take part, taking on 100 questions on a wide variety of subjects, along with a marathon round on Diana Ross songs and numerous silly, spot prizes.

The winning team, Coming From Behind, scored 90 points out of a possible 110.

They also won the marathon round and two spot prizes to cap a successful evening.

More importantly, over £500 was raised for club funds and a good time was had by all.

A special mention must be given to Keith Locke for his superb organisation in running the event and to his daughter Jo Dickson for her help with all the marking and keeping score on the night.
