Braintree Town manager Danny Cowley wasn’t viewing last weekend’s postponed fixture in a negative way.

A waterlogged Avanti Stadium pitch meant the Iron’s scheduled Vanarama National League game against Kidderminster Harriers couldn’t be played and it will have to be rearranged at a future date.

It was frustrating for Cowley and his team as they look to build on a run of form that has seen them lose just once in their last eight league outings and they will hope to extend that when they host Torquay United at the Avanti Stadium tomorrow.

However, the Iron boss was happy to look at the postponement in a positive way as it gave his battle-weary players a chance for some well-earned respite from a punishing playing schedule and to recover from injuries they may have been carrying.

“It was frustrating, but I think you can look at it from both points of view,” said Cowley.

“We prefer to see it in a positive way as it has given us a ten-day period to get batteries recharged.

“There was fatigue and injuries in the squad that we needed to get over, but it is a perriod that also gives us three training sessions with the lads on the spin.

“We have been craving for that because it’s not something that we’ve had for quite a period.

“I think the positives of having the game called off certainly outweigh the negatives.

“We’re in a good position with things going well and when you are battling like that, you just want to keep playing, but I think it’s important to see both points of view and we are viewing it in a positive way.

“We have just tried to make the most of the additional time that we’ve been given.

“On Saturday, we took the lads to the 3G pitch at Braintree Leisure Centre and had a really good training session with them then I went to Aldershot-Wrexham and Nicky went to Welling-Southport so we got to see four more teams in action.

“I then went to Woking-Tranmere on Tuesday and Nicky then went to Boreham Wood-Lincoln last night as we’ve got them coming up over the next few weeks and it was a chance to see them first-hand.

“So to get those games in and three training sessions – three really focused sessions – is great as it allows us to keep moving forward as a group.

“We’ve been doing work with the ball, without the ball and been able to learn more about sides coming up.

“You always need to have detailed contingency plans in place for when games get called off so that you are prepared for when the situation arises.”

The period away from competitive action has allowed Braintree’s injury list to ease and Cowley said he expected players such as Simeon Akinola, Michael Cheek and Chez Isaac, who were all doubts to face Kidderminster, a chance to recover.

He added: “I’m expecting to have everyone back available after the little break that we’ve had.

“Mark Phillips may be the only one who isn’t (with a broken bone in his foot) but he’s not too far away so we are getting there.”
