FRINTON Golf Club’s men vied for the Courage Trophy.

This contest is a singles 18-hole medal, with a maximum handicap of 24.

The temperature fell to its lowest of the season and the wind was gale-force.

However, the courageous prevailed and Barry Provoas won the silverware with a nett score of 76.

Peter Outtridge was second, with 77, and third place went to Gary Bishop, also with 77.

Only 18 men finished the event.

This week’s ladies’ stableford was played in unseasonably warm weather, but the wind was fierce, making the going quite difficult.

Audrey Joshua showed her mettle, winning with 27 points.

Joan Stevenson was a close second, with 26, and right behind her in third was Barbara Thorpe, with 25.

All three ladies have had lots of wins or places this season.

The annual general committee against staff event took place on a wet and windy Thursday.

The format was greensomes match play, with no quarter given.

There were six matches and with four teams in the clubhouse before lunch, it was two-all for about an hour, there was the time needed to complete the last two matches.

In the fifth match, the staff won on the last shot on the 18th, so it was then 3-2.

In the sixth match, the committee had been up by three, but the staff clawed their way back to all-square going up the 18th.

The score was even on the green, but the committee holed a good putt and won it, so in the end it was a draw.

However, the staff get to maintain the trophy as they were last year’s winners.

Kevin Mills, celebrating his 40th year as a member of the club’s green staff, received the trophy as the staff team captain from club captain Malcolm King.
