Danny Cowley may be set for a busy couple of days on the telephone as he looks at loan possibilities for his Braintree Town team.

The Iron currently have Colchester United midfielder Sammie Szmodics on loan at the Avanti Stadium, but his initial one-month deal will end after Saturday’s Vanarama National League home clash with Torquay United.

Szmodics has proved a big hit during his time at Braintree, with the 20-year-old midfielder scoring two goals in the three games he has played.

Cowley said he wasn’t sure if the U’s would agree to an extension that would keep Szmodics with his squad, but said he would look at other loan possibilities if Colchester wanted him to return to the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

“The game against Torquay will be Sammie’s last with us of the month loan deal that was agreed with Colchester,” said the Braintree manager.

“However, I’m hoping to speak with Colchester about the possibility of an extension.

“Whether we get another loanee in or not will depend on the outcome of any discussions with Colchester and how that conversation goes.

“We are looking at opportunities, but as always, it is dependent on the budget we have available.

“Hopefully some friends at one of the local professional clubs are feeling charitable.”
