A strong finish secured victory in Fiona Prentice’s Ladies Captain’s Day.

Margaret Carter, Madryn Abnett, Marilyn Free and Alison Cordran scored 19 points on the last three holes at Colchester Golf Club.

Cordran scored back-to-back four pointers, to help them post a winning total of 86 points.

Each of the quartet played their part in the victory in the Am-Am team competition, which was contested by 84 ladies.

Liz Duthie, Chris Clarke, Sally-Ann Angel and Heather Dennis were runners-up, with 84 points.

They finished second on countback from Rosie Helliwell, Penny Fairs, Gill Minns and Adrienne Strover.

Shot of the day went to Katie Cooper, who missed out on an eagle on the ninth hole by a matter of inches but still made her birdie.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Janet Austin on the eighth and Chris Hughes, on the 16th.

Julie Ruscoe won the putting competition after leaving her three putts a combined 37 inches from the hole, without even needing a practice swing, Family members played in pairs in the Turner Cup, which started in pouring rain but ended in glorious sunshine.

Mother and son team Nesta and Cai James compiled a sparkling round to finish with 44 points, beating the field by six shots.

Starting with a string of pars, they reached the turn in two over with 23 points and birdies on the 11th and 14th secured a further eight points.

Neil and George Whitbread were second with 38 points, including a spectacular eagle on the ninth hole while David and Richard Withnall were third (36 points).

The team of Bob Tebby, John Redden and Tony Jordan won Colchester GC’s Am-Am competition with 90 points.

The winners benefited from the competition’s emphasis on consistent play, with two of three scores counting.

The trio added four gross birdies and starting strongly with 49 points after nine holes.

They regularly collected shots with nett birdies and a solid back nine of 41 points gave them a comfortable margin of victory.

Russell Storey and Jason and Daniel Nicholls were runners-up with 87 points.

In third place on countback were Steve Sheffield, Mike Lapham and Malcolm Easton, with 84 points.

James Angel won the Walk on Medal, shooting a nett 68 playing off four, while Kevin Brett was second with a nett 72.
