GIHAN Dilruk and Kyran Young produced a match-winning partnership to help Frinton pull off a brilliant victory at Vauxhall Mallards.

Chasing 241, the coastal club got home with six wickets and three overs to spare.

At one point their run-chase looked unlikely, but Dilruk and Young scored 58 and 54 respectively in a 101-partnership to see Frinton cement their place in mid-table and leapfrog Mallards.

“It was another cracker,” said jubilant Frinton skipper Mark Jones.

“Mallards thought they’d done enough after scoring 240.

“However, Gihan and Kyran showed their class and you won’t see many more clinical finishes.”

After winning the toss, Frinton asked their hosts to bat first on the sort of wicket batsmen dream of.

Mallards set off at a quick pace, but were halted by the fast bowling of Mervyn Westfield.

The former Essex man cleaned up both openers to leave the hosts struggling on 62 for two.

Mallards’ overseas player, Devon Conway, then arrived to take control of the innings.

The Somerset second-team batsman worked hard while the middle order collapsed around him to the bowling of Dilruk, Young and Westfield.

Conway reach a well-deserved century before being caught by David Brent, off the bowling of Young.

Ex-Mallards skipper Paul Bradshaw then arrived to hit a lightning-fast 43, before being bowled by Young.

Mallards were all out for 240 but, critically, handed Frinton two of their overs.

With three wickets apiece for Westfield, Young and Dilruk, it was a good performance with the ball, if slightly expensive in the last ten overs.

With Frinton opener Mike Griggs absent, it fell to young Joe Fowler to open the innings on his Premier League debut.

Fowler proved more than up to the task, contributing 44 in a well-worked 98-run opening stand with veteran Ted Moulton.

Frinton skipper Jones then shuffled his pack and brought in Westfield.

But with Moulton departing on 44 and Westfield given lbw on an unlucky 13, it was generally felt the run-chase looked off.

Matt Foakes exited on nine before Young and Dilruk took centre stage.

Dilruk set off at a cracking pace and Young matched him from the other end in a beautifully-crafted run-chase.

A huge six from Young nearly decapitated the scorers, having been driven through a small window.

Young and Dilruk’s unbeaten 54 and 58 in a 101-partnership saw Frinton cruise home with three overs to spare and they resume their Norfolk travels on Saturday, with a trip to hard-hitting Great Witchingham.
