Bill Guthrie battled to victory in The Bill Newport Trophy at Maldon Golf Club.

This full handicap medal is played from the plates and the eponymous trophy honours the late Bill Newport, a former stalwart of the club and former amateur course-record holder.

This year’s winner, in a field of 47, was Guthrie with a fine nett 68.

He has only recently returned to golf at Maldon after a lengthy period of serious ill-health which kept him away from his beloved game.

Second place, on nett 70, went to Keith Bannister, while Nick Rushen was third on nett 72 on countback from Peter Harper.

New member Ian Keen was fifth, on nett 73, on countback from Darren Mason.

The nearest the pin prize for the closest second shot to the par four sixth/15th hole was won by Maldon’s Jubilee Cup team captain, Mel Knowles.

On Friday, 58 competitors took part in the sixth annual Peter Harris Memorial Charity Golf Day.

Organised by brothers Rob and Paul Holland, the event was inaugurated in 2010 by Peter’s golfing friends at Maldon following his untimely death in 2009 and the event has gone from strength to strength with more money being raised year on year.

The golf was followed by an evening meal along with a charity raffle organised by Peter’s widow Zena and her family and friends.

There was also an auction of golfing and football memorabilia.

The winning pair in the golf were John Rich and Ian Gibbons with a betterball stableford score of 44 points. They were awarded the pair of engraved silver trowels that commemorate Peter Harris’s time in the building trade.

In second place, on countback, were Ed Bishop and Kevin Matthams.

Initial indications are that over £1,400 was raised on the day and this will be donated to a cancer-related charity of Zena’s choosing.

Maldon ladies recently competed for the Rabbit Cup and Sylvia’s Salver.

The Rabbit Cup was won by Margaret Caviel on 20 points, with Mary Clark in second place on 18.

Sylvia’s Salver was won by Mary King on 33 points, second was Mrs L Reilly on 30 and third was Val Rayner on 28.

Maldon’s seniors’ section continued its successful start to the year with two more matches against other Essex clubs.

The first was the inaugural home match against Channels on May 18.

With the course in tremendous conditions a well-contested match ended in a four-all draw.

On Wednesday, another home match followed against The Notleys.

Another closely-fought match ended with Maldon winning 6-2.
