BURNHAM on Crouch played a thrilling Jubilee Cup game against The Notleys.

It was a very close affair on Sunday finishing up as a 4½-4½ draw.

The format is six singles and three pairs in a matchplay format.

Team captain Julian Hull said: “We now need The Notleys to win against Top Meadow in order to qualify for the quarter-final.”

Wins for Alex Gray, AJ Davies and Wilf White plus a half for Jamie Gold left just one match way out on the course.

With the overall score at 4½-3½ against Burnham, Jim Ross playing alongside Henry Mendel, pulled off the shot of the day.

It helped seal the last win and grab a half overall.

Burnham’s ladies bronze team were drawn away to Benton Hall and lost 6-1, with Jillean Hipsey their only winner.

The holders Burnham veterans played Maldon in a friendly for the Anchor Trophy.

Burnham won 4½-3½ and take a slender lead into the home leg on September 1.

Club captain Keith Lewis played his first match partnering veterans vice-captain John Merry.

The veterans maintained their unbeaten start to the season beating visiting Forrester Park 6-2.

Captain Barry Pressley, partnered by Terry Davis, led the way with a 4&3 win and this was followed by a John Merry and Theo Rowe 5&4 win.

There were other notable wins for Peter Hipsey and John Woodward 3&2, David Frost and David Gregson 4&3, Stephen Hull and Bob Hyde 4&3 and Les Palmer and Eddie Pittman 5&4.

The two losses were both by 2&1 and these were Treovor Roberts and Graeme Dale and Joe Elgie and Len Bailey.

David Frost won nearest the pin on 15th.
