MEMBERS of Harwich and Dovercourt Golf Club’s veterans’ section battled it out for the Ace Trophy.

After a close contest, Charlie Dennis and Tony Boddy lifted the prize with 43 points in a field of 34.

Rod Richardson and Keith Morris were second, on 40.

Sean O’Hara and Brian Hindley took third, with 38, on countback from Brian Austin and Rod Osborne.

Result: March Basil Warner stableford qualifier: 1 Brian Austin 38 points, 2 Barrie Wheatley 33 acb, 3 Sean O’Hara 33 ocb, 4 Steve Barker 33 ocb.

Meanwhile, Harwich’s ladies hosted Five Lakes in the second round of the Mail on Sunday matchplay competition.

Three of the first four matches were decided on the 18th hole and the scores were level.

Fittingly, it fell to lady captain Linda Burrows, in the final match, to decide the tie.

Unaware of the tension on the club-house terrace, she held her nerve to win the final hole, resulting in a thrilling three and two victory.

Jane Hurst, Ruth Stapleton, Phyllis Boddy and Viv Dale were the other Harwich players.

The team have now been drawn to play away against Frinton.

Georgina Grout and Dale won the club’s Coronation Foursomes, with Burrows and Hurst second.
